Did you know Washington ordered that Black men were not allowed into the Continenta army?
Yes ironically he allowes Billy Lee a Black Male servant was a close friend of his too. Washington had over 100+ slaves and refused them in Continental army but the British on the otherwise with the Dunmore proclamation does allow them and many jump to their side.
1) Why Does this make Washington a hypocrite or does it?
2) Why with the extra men with the Brits and less for US did we beat the Brits then? How did we get so lucky?
Just curious, this was as of 1775.
In The real world there is always the politic of the [possible. There was fear of many at the time of the revolution that Blacks if were allowed to serve they would demand freedom. Without the financial and physical support of the plantation owners the revolution would fail. It created a dichotomy that Jefferson wrote about. He said something like the slavery issue would someday bring down the new nation in a blood bath.
That is my short answer.
Slavery was an essential part of the economy in many parts of the colonies.
Of course the Brits would use any one to help stamp out the revolution and the promise of freedom for Blacks was not ever kept by them.
I can't say if this makes Washington a hypocrite. I does make him a pragmatist for sure.
